15 Days Safari: Kenya & Tanzania - Migration Tour

In the footsteps of wildebeest and zebra

Be there when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras roam the savannahs of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara and cross the Mara River. Of course, this is also a richly laid table for all predators.

We all have heard many times of the Great Migration, read about it and seen numerous reports. But a correct idea we get only when we experience this fascinating natural spectacle by ourself.

The drought of Serengeti drives hundreds of thousands of Wildebeests, zebras, gazelles and topi into Masai Mara. The migration of around two Million wild animals begins - an endless cycle and a struggle for life and death! Tightly to tightly pull the flocks hundreds of kilometers across the savannah, followed by hungry predators, just waiting for their chance. The undisputed highlight of the spectacle is thecrossing of the Mara River, which floods pose several dangers: Often the animals are swept away by the floods, as well as countless giant crocodiles lurking impatiently at the banks or in the water. The wild animals are easy prey because it performs no other way to aim! We are taken completely away, not to see the drama on the screen, but there live to be. Our journey is dedicated to the Great Migration and so we follow the way of the herds into Masai Mara and Serengeti for seven days. The scenes and images that gives us the greatest mass migration of mammals in the world, we will not forget - a unique spectacle of nature!

Day 1  Departure from Frankfurt
With Ethiopian Airlines we fly via Addis Ababa to Nairobi. In order to arrive the airport conveniently, we have included a Rail & Fly ticket in your travel package.

Day 2  Nairobi - Nakuru
In the morning we arrive in the Kenyan capital. Your guide is waiting for you! We drive directly out of Nairobi: In two hours it goes via the escarpment to Naivasha. At a viewpoint we have a spectacular panoramic view of the Rift Valley and its enchanting lakes. In Naivasha arrived, we do first break with a welcome snack and get to know us better. The region around the town is known for the cultivation of roses, which are exported all over the world. It goes on: Our goal today is Nakuru. For dinner we enjoy delicious samosas, curries with chapati or other local specialties; 210 km – 2 overnights at Eagle Palace Hotel*** or at Milimani Guest House** or at Nuru Palace Hotel** (L/D).

Day 3  Lake Nakuru National Park - a full day!
Early in the morning we head to nearby Lake Nakuru National Park. Chances are high to see big cats like leopards and lions. And on many representatives of more than 450 different species of birds! At noon we enjoy a leisurely picnic under an acacia tree in the nature. We then do not need a lot of luck to spot the endangered white and black rhino! The park is also home to another animal rarity: the Rothschild giraffe. Only a few hundred of them exist in Kenya and Uganda. Here in Lake Nakuru National Park they have found a safe haven . Our day ends with treats at the buffet of our hotel - those who still want to experience some nightlife, can take a Tuk Tuk to a nice bar (B/L/D).

Day 4  Nakuru - Maasai Mara National Reserve
Again today we are up early, because the trip to Masai Mara is long: Not later than at 8 a.m. we sit in our buses and drive through the Rift Valley. We stop in Narok where we stock up some supplies to to make half an hour later at the edge of the Loita Plains a picnic break. In the late afternoon we reach our camp on wdge of Masai Mara National Reserve. The next 3 nights we sleep in stationary, simple tents with real beds and private bathroom / WC. Even from here we can see in the distance the herds roaming of Masai cows. With a "Sopa", the traditional greeting of the Masai, we are welcomed - waiting for us a simple but tasty dinner in a charming setting; 280 km - 4 overnights either at Fisi Camp** or at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge**(*) or at Rhino Tourist Tented Camp** (B/D).

Day & 6 Maasai Mara National Reserve - two full days!
Over the next two days we will witness a rare natural spectacle and have the chance, in all its drama to witness the migration live: Huge herds of wildebeest marching around this season through the vast plains of Masai Mara and let the soil rumble under the thunderous of their tremble hooves. Searching for food, hundreds of thousands of animals march per year up to 3,000 km. On Mara River we see with some luck, the spectacular river crossing of the herds. This is a dangerous step towards the foraging wildebeest, gazelles and zebras in fertile areas. Even arrived on the opposite bank, provides for the exhausted animals no safety. Hyenas and lions are waiting for weakened animals that represent an easy prey for them. At noon we set during our game drives always a break for a picnic before we leave again for new adventures. And what could be better than to exchange the evening about these experiences - campfire under starry skies of Africa and nice conversations at our camp (B/L/D).

Day 7 Maasai Mara National Reserve - another day!
In the middle of this beautiful nature, it is easy to get up early: Before breakfast and sunrise we spot today for spotted hyenas and other predators. Who has booked a balloon safari (optional), the day begins at 4 a.m. To visit a Masai village we meet again (depending on the date of arrival, we will visit the village on day 5 or 6 instead). This is none of this tourist showpiece villages, but one that is still really lived in the tradition and with which we are closely connected, thanks to our locally partner. All this includes the discreet sale of souvenirs and some folklore - but this takes place in a beautiful frame instead, finally, we want to get to know some art and culture of the Masai. An English speaking Masai from the village guides us through narrow dark dwellings and explains many peculiarities of this fascinating people. After visiting his village, our local guide takes us to the cattle and weekly market. Colorful and turbulent is here too, goats change the owner like amulets and other curiosities (the market is only open on Tuesdays. Depending on the arrival date, the visit will take place on day 5 or 6; otherwise there will be an game drive alternative ly). For late lunch we come for a rest in our camp back - before it goes around 3.30 p.m. on the next exciting game drive until sunset (B/L/D).

Day 8  Maasai Mara National Reserve - Lake Victoria
Again we get up early: The way to the border of Tanzania is far and the journey can take depending on weather, road conditions and necessary route changes 5-8 hours. If the weather permits, we cross Masai Mara, go up on the western side the Oloololo Escarpment to enjoy the view back to Masai Mara. Around noon we reach the border to Tanzania. Our guide will help us with the formalities and also the visa we get quickly. Our drivers put our luggage into jeeps and we welcome our new drivers and guides from Tanzania. After a 2 to 3 hours drive, we reach the Kijereshi Tented Camp - within view of the second largest lake in the world, the Victoria Lake. Make yourself cofortable at the camp and for dinner we enjoy a first time Tanzanian cuisine; 380 - 450 km – 1 overnight either at Speke Bay Lodge**(*) or at Serenity on the Lake Resort**(*) or at Matvilla Beach Resort** (B/L/D).

Day 9  Lake Victoria - Serengeti National Park
After the long trip yesterday, you can sleep now! We will not stop to attend a village visit with a boat trip on and around Lake Victoria (optional). On this tour you walk through a typical fishing village. Perhaps you have already learned some words of Kiswahili during the trip and can greet the villagers. We are welcomed with a lot of laughter even with no language skills, especially by the children of the village school. They will enjoy the visit of the exotic Europeans. Then it goes to Lake Victoria where we get a fresh breeze and watch the colorful birdlife. A 2 hours drive brings us after lunch to the world famous Serengeti: zebra, wildebeest, gazelles and antelopes cross our way in the afternoonwhile driving through the park before we reach Central Serengeti. Our tents are already pinched up and the local chef is preparing dinner. Right now at peak season we are not the only one in this area - but it is always an unforgettable experience, to stay within the wilderness with no fence and at night listening to the sounds of the animals; 150 km – 3 overnights in Serengeti National Park, camping - depending on animal locations at different places (B/L/D).

Day 10  & 11 Serengeti Nationalpark - a full day!
Our guide has a good nose and information on the whereabouts of  the large herds of animals - depending on availability we stay at different campsites to be close to the herds. The next two days we will intensively look for the "Big Five": lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino! It is a real adventure and we are very close to nature... at night we sleep into our tents, surrounded by the animals of the savannah, over us the stars - unforgettable (B/L/D).

Day 12 Serengeti National Park - Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The animals do wake up early, so we start today again just after sunrise with our first game drive (alternatively a balloon safari is possible - inform your guide at the beginning of the trip, if you want to book this - optional). Then we have breakfast at our camp and then pack up: We go for game game in the southern Serengeti! Here the grass is usually very short and hardly a bush or tree manages to dig its roots deep enough into the hard ground. An ideal area for cheetahs and gazelles. Both excellent sprinter who live preferably in this region, because lions or leopards have little chances to make prey without almost no cover. We leave the Serengeti and drive to Ngorongoro Highlands. Our campsite is situated not far from the crater rim. Friendly Masai offer to accompany us for a small fee safely to the viewpoint, because up here in the woods elephants stray around. The view into the crater is overwhelming, because although it goes down steep up to 600 m, you can see elephants and other animal groups from up here! Our tents are already rebuilt and we let a little residual heat come in, at night sometimes it is cold below 5°C on 2,300 m above sea level. After dinner we sit at the campfire before we then crawl into our sleeping bags, 80 km – 1 overnight at Ngorongoro Crater, camping (B/L/D).

Day 13  Ngorongoro Crater - Arusha
Still at dusk, we get up because early in the morning wildlife is very active! At 6.30 a.m. we are ready - until noon we go for game drive for lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, hippos, wildebeest, gazelles and many birds: In Ngorongoro Crater almost entirely African wildlive lives in this small space! Only giraffes are not able to climb down the steep crater walls. We picnic inside the crater, then make a stop at the graves of Michael and Bernhard Grzimek, continue through the fertile region of Karatu and then enjoy the magnificent view down the Rift Valley. In the early evening we reach Arusha. After some nights of camping we look forward to the simple comforts of a room; 150 km – 1 overnight at McElly's Hotel** or at Graceland Hotel** or at Gwajehe Lodge  ** in Arusha (B/L).

Day 14 Arusha - Flight to Frankfurt (possibility for beach extension)
Weal and woe of our centrally located hotel: For going out it's nice, for sleeping quite noisy because the city center of Arusha awakes early with the call of the muezzin and the honking of matatus. Before transfer to the airport in the evening, you can still enjoy time for leisure. How about a walk through the city or visit of a coffee plantation? For farewell dinner we meet again! Late in the evening transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport, for flying back to Germany via Addis Ababa; 60 km (B/D).

Day 15 Arrival in Frankfurt
We arrive in the morning in Frankfurt. If you are not from the Main metropolis, then why not use your included Rail & Fly ticket to travel to your home environmentally friendly.

Beach extension
When for you the sea, beach and sun are marvelous, then we are definitely ready to assist you with the hotel bookings at the beach.

The colorful spice island of Zanzibar with picturesque bays and its cultural and historical treasures is the best choice for that.

A wonderful addition to your safari!

Your security is our priority!
Changes to the itinerary are possible, if necessary, depending on the situation and conditions on the ground. They will be discussed with you.
